Monster made its world premiere on May 17, 2023, at the esteemed 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it took home the Best Screenplay and Queer Palm honors. The film centers on fifth-grader Minato Mugino (Sōya Kurokawa), whose mother Saori Mugino (Sakura Andō) becomes suspicious of her son's behavior and begins to look for solutions. Through her investigation, schoolteacher Michitoshi Hori's (Eita Nagayama) involvement is revealed. What looks like a harmless schoolyard fight quickly turns into a chaotic situation that captures the attention of the media. Unnoticed is Minato's friendship with his classmate Yori Hoshikawa (Hinata Hiiragi).
