Merry Christmas: Sriram Raghavan's Thriller Unfolds a Perilous Christmas Eve Date

In the upcoming thriller Merry Christmas, directed by Sriram Raghavan of Andhadhun, Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif's first date on Christmas eve turns into a nightmare. The makers released the trailer on Wednesday.

In the two minutes and twenty seconds of the trailer, Katrina and Vijay's characters are introduced as total strangers who are waiting in "sweet anticipation" for their first date. The video shows the two strangers going about their daily lives while they wait to meet, starting with them grinding peanuts and sleeping pills in two different mixers. Even though their date starts off nicely, as midnight approaches, everything goes horribly wrong.

Their only option when the night's events put their lives in danger is to ask Sanjay Kapoor's M for assistance. He describes himself as a "lone wolf" that "the good lord knew how to keep in the right place at the right time." The trailer, which features throwback graphics reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 crime film Pulp Fiction, concludes with Vijay saying that there are instances when choosing violence over sacrifice is the better course.

The Tamil version of Merry Christmas showcases more intense scenes and introduces Rajesh Williams and Kavin Jay Babu, while the Hindi trailer features other cast members like Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan, Ashwini Kalsekar, Radhika Apte, and Tinnu Anand. The Winter movement from violin concerto The Four Seasons by Italian composer Vivaldi is the musical accompaniment for the latter version.

Merry Christmas, which is produced by Ramesh Taurani, Sanjay Routray, Jaya Taurani, and Kewal Garg under the Matchbox Pictures banner, is scheduled to open in theaters in both Tamil and Hindi on January 12, 2024.
