Michael Keaton Returns in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" Sequel: Teaser Trailer Released
Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.

In Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton plays the title ghost once more. Recently, a teaser trailer for the sequel to Tim Burton's 1988 comedy-horror Beetlejuice was released. It stars Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz as a goth-loving mother. As Lydia's daughter, Jenna Ortega also features in the future movie.

Warner Bros. Pictures released the one-minute, sixteen-second teaser on Friday. It starts with Jenna's Astrid Deetz riding past Miss Shannon's School for Girls, a private girls' school in Connecticut that her mother Lydia attended in the original movie. In contrast to her mother, who was once a goth adolescent with a penchant for the macabre, Astrid wears a carefree multicolored ribbed dress and wears little makeup.

The video is set to a choral arrangement of Harry Belafonte's Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), a traditional Jamaican folk song. Burton used the song in the original movie during a famous scene where Lydia lip-syncs and dances to it at a dinner party that her parents and the annoying guests of the Deetzes are throwing.

We get an emotional image of Lydia, Astrid, and Catherine O'Hara's Delia Deetz at a funeral while the eerie soundtrack plays in the background. Then, as the camera pans to Astrid, it shows her revealing a tiny model of Winter River in her attic. Lydia races upstairs at the end of the scene to find the model unclothed. Lydia is left gaping in horror when a monstrous, towering figure of Keaton's Beetlejuice emerges from behind the model.

The 1988 movie was about the ghosts of Barbara and Adam Maitland, who died in a car accident, haunting their old house. The Maitlands use the aid of the cunning Beetlejuice to frighten the Deetz family away when they move in. But as Beetlejuice goes berserk, the plot goes awry. In the end, Lydia is asked to assist the Maitland ghosts and the Deetz family in defeating Beetlejuice and figuring out a peaceful solution for everyone to live in the house together.

The Deetz family returns to Winter River as a three-generation family following an unanticipated tragedy. Astrid, Lydia's rebellious teenage daughter, finds the enigmatic town model in the attic and unintentionally opens the portal to the Afterlife, completely upending Lydia's world—she is still tormented by Beetlejuice. The official film summary reads, "With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem."

Beetlejuice, which also stars Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci, is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6.
