Security Guard Beaten Up for Refusing to Give Kali Puja Contribution

Security guard Nanda Mondal of the Raiganj subdivisional officer (SDO) was beaten up after he was accused of not giving Rs 15,000 as a contribution for Kali Puja.

The three-year-old police policeman said that some local club members had wanted a Rs 20,000 gift from him in 2022 when he was building his home at Kalibari More on the outskirts of Raiganj town.

It seems that he promised the organization that he would make payments "according to his capacity" the next year.

"They came to me on Saturday night at around 11 p.m. and wanted Rs. 15,000 as chanda, but I refused to pay. After that, the roughly 12-person gang physically attacked me, mistreated my wife, and looted my house, according to Mondal.

The Raiganj SDO, Kingshuk Maity, described the event as distressing and said that an assault on a police officer would send the wrong message to the people.

He said Mondal got in touch with him right after following the incident.

"As soon as my security guard informed me, I called the police and requested that they take the appropriate action," the SDO said.

After receiving care at Raiganj Medical College, Mondal was allowed to go.

Sridevi, his spouse, filed a complaint at the police station. She said, "We no longer feel safe to stay here because we are scared."

According to police sources, four people were taken into custody in relation to this. Two of the thugs, including the principal defendant, are still at large, however.

Multiple reports of forced chanda collecting were coming in from all across the town, according to sources. According to a source, "some have threatened a promoter and an owner of an eatery in the town's Mohanbati area."

The majority of these occurrences get unreported to us. According to Sankar Kundu, general secretary of the North Dinajpur Chamber of Commerce, "it will be easier for us to bring it to the notice of the administration for necessary steps if we are informed in time."
