Late on Friday night, foresters in the Baikunthapur forest division on the outskirts of Siliguri stopped an effort to transport animal parts, found elephant tusks, and made three arrests.
According to sources, foresters in the division's Ambari forest area learned that several smugglers had gathered in Champasari, a place in northern Siliguri, and were attempting to sell elephant tusks.
We got in touch with them pretending to be prospective purchasers, and we worked out a plan to acquire 1kg of tusk for Rs 3 lakh. After arriving to the location, we were able to apprehend three people after finding two pieces of tusks, according to range officer Alamgir Haque.
Together, the parts weigh more than 2 kg. Two of the people that were detained are from outside the state, while the third is a resident.
A forester said, "We suspect some more people were with them and fled during the raid."
