The workings of a fall director With her courtroom drama dominating the 49th edition of the César Awards this year at the Olympia Theater in Paris, Justine Triet became the second woman to receive the Best Director title in the history of the awards on Friday.

The last female director to win the best director prize at the Cesar Awards was Tonie Marshall, who did so in 1976 with Venus Beauty.


Best Director and Best Picture went to Triet's Anatomy of a Fall. Sandra Hüller won Best Actress for her outstanding performance as well. The movie also took home awards for Original Screenplay, Editing, and Supporting Actor (Swann Arlaud). The film, which is vying for five Oscars, stars Hüller as an author caught up in a legal battle after her spouse passed away mysteriously at their remote cabin.

Thomas Cailley's Animal Kingdom, which wowed spectators as the Cannes Un Certain Regard opening film in 2023, was another noteworthy prize of the evening. With wins in categories including Best Sound, VFX, Original Music, Costumes, and Cinematography, the movie demonstrated its technical skill.

The ceremony's honorable homage to renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan was one of its highlights. The filmmaker was presented on stage by Marion Cotillard, who worked with Nolan on both The Dark Knight Rises and Inception. Actress, screenwriter, and filmmaker Agnes Jaoui was honored with a César Award as well.
