BJP Fields Two Ex-MNF Leaders in Mizoram Assembly Elections

Two former MNF leaders are among the candidates the BJP has put forward for the Mizoram Assembly elections on November 7.

In an attempt to increase its representation in the House of 40 from its current one MLA, the opposition party on Wednesday revealed the names of 21 candidates in two categories, four of whom are female.

Twelve candidates made up the first group, and nine in the second.

Among the candidates were two former MNF leaders: Dr. K. Beichhua, a former minister who was ousted from the MNF for engaging in anti-party actions, and Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo, who was not nominated again by the ruling party. Beichhua has been nominated from the Saiha constituency, while Sailo has been selected from Mamit.

Despite being a part of both the NEDA and the NDA, which are run by the BJP, the MNF is not affiliated with the party in the state. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, accused the MNF on Monday and Tuesday of being BJP entry points.

All 40 seats are up for grabs, with the ruling MNF, the opposition Congress, and the Zoram People's Movement competing.

There are 8,51,895 voters in Mizoram, 4.38 of them are female.
