Cricket Legend Takes on New Role in Longtime Passion Sport

The legendary player, who also had great success as an amateur golfer, has been elevated to the position of President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) He is a World Cup winner and former captain of the Indian cricket team.

The 65-year-old, who served as the Vice President of the PGTI Board before, was selected unanimously to succeed H R Srinivasan, whose term is coming to an end.


Kapil is well-known for being an avid golfer; at one point, his handicap was practically zero.

"As someone who has been involved with PGTI for a number of years, it is an honor to take on the role of President. Regarding his new role, Kapil remarked, "It's a players body, and I am great friends with all of them and with whom I often play."

Golf has been Kapil's love for more than thirty years. He even had ambitions of representing India at the Asian Games, back when it was only available to amateurs.

I now spend the most of my time playing this sport. It is an honor to be selected as President by the players, as I have served as Vice-President and am a member of the Board. As I have always done, I pledge to give it my all.

"What gives me even greater pleasure is that I will be able to spend more time with my golfing friends and play a little more," he stated.

The Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational, held at the DLF Golf and Country Club and offering a purse of Rs 2 crore (about USD 240,000), is one of the most profitable events on the Tour. Kapil has been leading the charge in trying to attract new sponsors for PGTI.

Due to his popularity and love of the game, Kapil has received invitations to prestigious golf tournaments like the Dunhill Links, where he has played with other well-known figures from over the world in recent years.

"I love playing golf. It is an extremely calming sport that you can play until you are any age. Even though I play cricket a lot, I still go to the golf course for leisure. I want to improve my game because I am privileged to be able to serve golf," he continued.

He is good friends with many of India's finest golfers, including Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, and many more.

Kapil represented India in cricket between 1978 and 1994.

One of the all-time great all-rounders, he captained India to victory in the 1983 World Cup while playing 131 Test matches and 225 one-day matches.

His 1983 World Cup innings of 175 not out is regarded as one of the best in the history of the game.

He set a global record in Test cricket by scoring 5248 runs, including eight hundreds, and taking 434 wickets.

In ODIs, he also amassed 3783 runs and claimed 253 wickets.
